There has been a lot of press coverage of late surrounding Myleene Klass, and her 'quickie divorce' from her husband Graham Quinn. Reports have stated that in a matter of just 100 seconds, a Judge ruled that their marriage of only 6 months had irretrievably broken down and granted a divorce.

1st April 2013 meant big changes in funding…. One month on and the Ministry of Justice have announced further plans for change.

In a recent judgment Mr Justice Baker emphasised the importance of the role played by lawyers in family Court proceedings. Baker J said that all judges are "very concerned at the prospect of an increase in self-represented litigants and the consequences for the family justice system. Not enough recognition is given to the contribution to the family justice system made by family lawyers". (Devon County Council v EB & Ors (Minors) [2013] EWHC 968 (Fam)).

There was an interesting article in the Guardian on 1.4.13, the day that significant changes to Legal Aid came into force. According to a recent survey carried out by the Centre for Human Rights in Practice at the University of Warwick, cutting £350m from legal aid budget will leave vulnerable people struggling to find help, and will in effect create ‘advice deserts’ in parts of the country.

Following the news of Mr Justice Ryder's judgment in favour of the LSC in the case of JC v the LSC, ruling that the LSC had not acting unlawfully when it refused to allow the full costs of the expert assessment to fall onto the child's certificate.

All to often in the press there is mention of fat cat lawyers trampling over everyone only caring about earning a fast buck. Family law has never been about making money , most cases are publicly funded , family law is about giving people who are often at a very vulnerable stage in their lives support, and access to the right advice.

The Supreme Court decision this week in the case of Kernott and Jones is interesting because in making judgment both Lord Collins and Lord Wilson were critical of the continuing failure of parliament to legislate on cohabitation.
